Return of the Band That Time Forgot

September 8, 2006 at 9:10 pm (New, Sounds/Silence)

Pearl Jam’s self-titled eighth album is a stunning return to form. What that form is exactly, is not easy to answer. These certainly aren’t the same grungers who broke through in the early 90’s with Ten. But after four albums worth of necessary wanderings (and numerous great tracks), Pearl Jam’s new album seems to find the band in a place where they belong.

This is album is chockfull of, well, rock n’ roll. From the opening track “Life Wasted” to the satisfying ending reverberations of “Inside Job,” Pearl Jam has made an album that is listenable from beginning to end. Read the rest of this entry »

You and Whose Army?

September 7, 2006 at 9:10 pm (New, Politics)

Nine weeks til elections…are we safe(r)? How do we tell?

Now Bush and his cronies come out on the offensive, wrongly labeling dissent as “appeasement” and demonizing anyone who don’t agree with their neo-fascist policies.

Secret prisons.
Wiretapping.
Legalizing torture. Read the rest of this entry »

Neko CaseFox Confessor Brings the Flood

Let us get to the point. Go out and purchase/steal/borrow this album immediately. That’s it. Simple. Do it.

If you are a previous Neko Case fan then you probably already own this yourself, and yes it did come out…hmmmm…six months ago. So I’m a little behind. Sue me. But if you haven’t made headway into Neko Case’s world, there has never been a better time then now. Read the rest of this entry »

Legalized Bibliophilia

September 1, 2006 at 3:49 pm (New, Notes and Footnotes)

So I just discovered Library Thing, and it rocks!  I’ve wanted a way to catalog my books and share them, and this is the best way so far.  Now I can just stare at our bookshelves with my laptop and enter books enter books enter books.  Yay!  But dear God, this will be an arduous and tedious process.  But it might just help me see exactly all the books we’ve acquired through the years and exactly how many we have, as I have no idea.  Here’s my profile at Library Thing.  Join and be happy.

The Baby!

August 31, 2006 at 1:12 am (Baby Stuff)

So this is my first time blogging the baby. I find myself almost at a loss at what to say besides the obvious: I am so excited!!! We got our first ultrasound in early August and the pics took my breath away. I was expecting a formless blob of cells. But instead…a heartbeat, limbs, digits, a brain, everything! It was amazing to see all of that and imagine it came from my wife and I (no comment on what that means for baby!). Everyday I look more and more forward to being a father. File this under mushy, heartwarminess. I may be a hardline lefty radical in politics, but I’m really just a softy deep down. Updates abound, especially after October 2nd when w find out the sex!

In the Land of the Blind…

February 3, 2006 at 9:05 am (Politics)

“I mean, we’ve got Chavez in Venezuela with a lot of oil money,” Rumsfeld added. “He’s a person who was elected legally – just as Adolf Hitler was elected legally – and then consolidated power and now is, of course, working closely with Fidel Castro and Mr. Morales and others.”

So says the Secretary of Idiocy.

One question Mr. Rumsfeld.

If, as you say, that Chavez is similar to Hitler because he was elected legally and then consolidated power, then what does make Bush, who won the election illegally in 2000? Well I suppose that would make him WORSE THAN HITLER you dumb bastard. And talk about consolidation of power?!? Where have we seen more of it than in the Bush administration and their strong-arm techniques around the world and here at home, and there ever less transparent actions!!! To compare Chavez, or Morales or even Castro to Hitler is obtuse, offensive and just plain moronic. You cannot go around talking about democracy this, democracy that, and then when leaders whom you and the administration don’t like are elected, talk about their likeness to Hitler. They were elected legally, more than your fearless leader can say, and the reason leftist governments are being elected at quickening pace in Latin America is BECAUSE of the sort of covert, democracy killing actions that the populations of Latin America have seen enacted by Republican American government especially in the Reagan administration, but also in the Bush administration. What worries me is the way this country creeps closer and closer to a police state. Perhaps you should keep your nose here in the ever-worsening sphere of American politics, rather than making rash, stupid statements about Chavez, et. al in Latin America. Perhaps you should watch them to see how democracy really works you arrogant pig.

So ends the gospel.
